Ship Security Officer
The Ship Security Officer is an official, reporting to the captain, appointed by the company to deal with ship security matters, including implementation of the ship security plan and communication with the company security officer and the port facility security officer. The main functions of the Ship Security Officer are:
- informing the captain and crew of the ship regarding the levels of threat that the ship may encounter, based on an appropriate risk assessment and other information on the matter;
- ensuring the assessment of ship security;
- ensuring the development, submission for approval and subsequent implementation and maintenance of the ship security plan;
- ensuring that appropriate changes are made to the ship security plan to correct deficiencies and to meet the requirements for the security of a particular ship;
- conducting internal audits and reviews of security activities;
- carrying out initial and subsequent inspections of the ship by the Administration or an organization recognized in the field of security;
- ensuring that deficiencies and inconsistencies revealed during internal audits, periodic reviews, security checks and compliance checks are promptly identified and corrected;
- activity aimed at increasing the crew’s awareness of the importance of security issues and increasing vigilance;
- ensuring proper training of persons responsible for the security of the ship;
- effective communication and cooperation with relevant port security officials;
- ensuring compatibility of security requirements with general maritime safety requirements;
- coordinating issues related to the implementation of the ship security plan with the company security officer and the relevant port facility security officer; and ensuring that the ship's security equipment is properly operated, inspected, calibrated and maintained.
The volume of the training program “Ship Security Officer” is 40 ac. hours.
Based on the results of certification in the International Dangerous Goods and Containers Association, graduates receive certificates of advanced training and “Ship Security Officer” certificates of international standard.
